The OLG – You’ll never believe this! And of course, some politics as well…

Before I talk politics, especially with five bye-elections imminent, I have to tell you an incredible story.

The other day I was shopping and decided to buy a lottery ticket on my way out of the store.  I’ve never bought a ticket there before and just had an urge.  I handed over a toonie for a quick pick and put the ticket into my pocket.

I walked home and went into my office and reached into my pocket to get my ticket.  NO TICKET!  GONE!  I hadn’t signed it – I had been jostled in the store and also in the elevator in my condo building.  It either fell out of my pocket or someone had lifted it out of my pocket.

SOMEBODY HAD MY TICKET!  It was a sick feeling.  What if it was a winning ticket? Would I be fixated on that possibility forever?  My ticket was gone– a ticket that was NO DOUBT going to be a winner.  How did I know that?  Because it was mine and it was gone!

For fifteen minutes I paced around totally aggravated, envisioning the winning ticket in the hands of someone else and me spending the rest of my life wondering if I had blown $50 million dollars.  I tried to put it out of my mind but I couldn’t.

Then I remembered reading some articles about lottery issues and new OLG monitoring systems being introduced.  And I did watch that fabulous CBC documentary on how the OLG found the $5 million dollar winners of another lost ticket.  So I decided to call the OLG before I developed an ulcer.

I am now a 150% lover of the OLG!  Even though I called on a Sunday, I was connected to a living person who was absolutely divine as she assured me that they could probably track the ticket I had bought.  I could not believe that!

When I told her where, when, how much and she said that the OLG would investigate and get back to me.  And they did!

They called me this morning to tell me that they had tracked my ticket – they knew what time I had bought it – they wouldn’t confirm if they had a camera on at the terminal.  What a relief! At least I wouldn’t have to suffer the uncertainty of, “what if?”

And now to the creepo out there who has my ticket.  If you try to cash it in…SURPRISE!!!!  So, if it is a winning ticket, I won’t be out of luck.   If it isn’t a winning ticket, at least I will know that too.  No anguish like that poor man suffered so many years ago when another crooked store owners stole his ticket before the OLG tracked them down.  I hope they are still in jail.

Kudos to the OLG!  I do not understand how the tracking process works and I have no idea how some genius created a program that provides valid protection for all of us.  But thanks – and now I’m off to play bridge with a clear head.

I’m back!  Had a good game – came in second with a 61%.  But I had a good partner.  And now on to some politics.

What has been going on in this Province this past year is insane!  The party in power isn’t the cause – it is the limited brainpower of the politicians themselves, Liberal, Tory, NDP.  Yes, my last blog was very complimentary about some of them– but not this one.

McWynne is smart, has a kind heart but she is under the spell of the unions – along with Andrea Horwath.

TDSB , McWynne, Sandals and the former Deputy Minister of Education, now charged as an alleged pedophile, had planned a sex education curriculum for our public school age kids that was hush hush.  How many of you have had a chance to look at their bizarre proposals?  You really must do that.

I believe that personal choices for adults are just that – personal and their own businessBut I don’t want them to try to foist their choices on my grandchildren.

So if you are concerned about what the TDSB is doing, let your voices be heard – send a message via your MPP or directly to the TDSB if you can – they don’t publicly disclose their email address or telephone number – I wonder why?  Or try the teachers union.

And what a disappointment Horwath has been.  As I said in one of my earlier blogs, she looked so good – she spoke so well – I was tempted to forget what the NDP is really about.  But then crunch time arrived!  Horwath pretended, at first, that she didn’t know how McGuinty had ripped off the people of Ontario for over $850 million dollars with McWynne’s knowledge and consent.

However, when confronted with the facts, she hedged – then didn’t have the guts to keep her word and stand up for us.   She simply slithered off under a rock where she has been hiding for the last several weeks.  Even NDP Giambrone couldn’t bring her out from under her nest to campaign for him until yesterday.  Is it because he is sooooo bad or she is soooooo weak?  Who cares anymore – they deserve each other.

What makes this whole situation worse is that these two party leaders are women and have fallen back into the stereotypical role of the olden days – indecisive, weak and wimpy.  They are even wimpier than Hudak who is himself king of the wimps.  So now what?  Don’t bother voting?  Please NO!  A35% turnout is what keeps a government in power.

If any of you live in one of the five ridings that have by-elections coming on Thursday August 1st, PLEASE VOTE!  Encourage anyone you know who lives there to vote!

And now, the good news!  I am changing the topic – a new baby for Prince William and Kate.  How exciting for them!  What a reminder it is to so many of us how proud we are to be Canadian, how proud we are to be a part of the Commonwealth, and how terrific it is to be able to share in this wonderful celebration.  And those Republicans who say that the Monarchy is antiquated and soon to be dead?  Tell that to the hundreds of thousands of Britons standing in the dead of night cheering, waving flags and singing.

I’ll let you know if my lottery ticket is a winner.
